patterns and step combinations to get you moving!! We will begin with
finger cymbal pattern mastery and transition into layering isolation
and step combinations with your zills. This class is geared toward the
intermediate dancer however all are welcome!

Beginning Doumbek/Darbuka

Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30

Each session consists of 4 one hour classes, 30 dollars
(students with some experience can attend on a drop-in basis for 9 dollars a class, please contact me in advance to let me know you will be there, priority for a seat will be given to students taking the full course) Each class consists of approximately 50% technique and 50% rhythms.
The fundamental technique taught is based on Arabic style playing, but I will also introduce the new Turkish style of playing. It is also my belief that it is important for beginning drummers to understand the role of the drum in the context of a musical ensemble, so beginning in the second class, we end the hour with the students playing a rhythm while I play a song on oud or other string instrument.

Intermediate/Advanced doumbek/darbuka
Wednesdays, 7:45-8:45
Students with sufficient background of basic technique and rhythms are welcome to take this class (instructor permission required). We review basic technique as required, but primarily focus on advanced technique, both Arabic and Turkish, and on more complicated and advanced ornametation and elaboration of traditional rhythms. Students wishing to perform drum solos are given instruction and the chance to lead drum solos in class. We also focus on drumming in an ensemble setting, drumming to support melody instruments, changing rhythms etc. This class also offers occasional performance opportunities to those interested in playing on stage.

Private lessons are also available for students at any level. Contact me for information about scheduling and fees. Classes are held at my home in the Hollywood neighborhood in Northeast Portland.

About me: I have been playing music for many years, dating back to high school playing a wide range of music styles. As a drummer I have taken workshops from a number of well known musicians including Souhail Kaspar, Faisal Zedan, Tobias Robeson, Raquy Danziger and Karim Nagi among others.

Besides playing a number of different hand drums, I play various string instruments including oud, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and cumbus. I have played over the years with various ensembles in the Portland area and have played with and taught workshops in the UK and Portland with Mizna and Gypsy Caravan.

I am currently playing in Negara, both strings and drums, and also drumming in Krebsic Orkestar.
