10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Maia Alexandra: “BELLY!” Returning the belly to belly dance! Once a common sight in bellydancing, this workshop will focus on clean techniques for belly rolls, pops, and flutters. Maia Alexandra will begin by teaching floor and standing exercises to locate and isolate your abdominals, breaking down the movements fully. Then learn fun new ways of using these awesome crowd pleasing moves in creative combinations! (Please do not eat a large meal prior to workshop.)
1:00-3:00 p.m. – Elena Villa: MANTON – This fusion workshop will draw on veil technique that belly dancers may already possess in order to familiarize students with the slightly heavier Spanish shawl and its use as a fiery and elegant accent in Spanish and flamenco dance. All levels are welcome. Please bring a shawl to dance with. I will have a couple to lend as well. Workshop includes an informational handout. This workshop will focus on integrating flamenco movements and Middle Eastern dance techniques and will be particularly useful for belly dancers looking to gain further understanding of flamenco, or for any dancer interested in exploring fusion styles, or who plans to choreograph a piece of music that has Spanish or flamenco elements. All levels are welcome but familiarity with some belly dance basics will be assumed. No flamenco experience necessary.

CELEBRATING THEIR RADIANCE IN WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Eight luminous local women take the stage in “Hathor Unveiled: An
Homage to Seattle’s Belly Dance Origins.” Like Hathor, an ancient
Egyptian goddess of music, dance, and foreign lands, who personified
feminine love, motherhood, and joy, these women have dedicated their
lives to sharing the many benefits of belly dance, enriching Puget
Sound culture and the confidence, health, and wellness of countless
other women. All over the age of 45, they continue to teach, innovate,
and perform.
This show celebrates the artistry and beauty of seasoned women in
performance while paying tribute to the many influential lifelong
belly dance artists in our area who laid the groundwork for today’s
prolific belly dance scene. Although only eight are featured in the
coming show, there are many more to be acknowledged. Inspired by their
teachers and mentors, this show is produced by Malia Mihailoff and
Suzanna Davis. It is hoped that the debut of this event will lead to
future productions featuring more of these remarkable women of our
community.

offering lessons in Ras Hasatan, a desert oasis near Nuweba in the Sinai Desert!
$300 per person for instruction. This does not include airfare, accomodation or food.
Accomodation at Ras Hasatan is about $6 per night for a bungalow, and you buy food from the restaurant which is also very reasonably priced. Roundtrip chartered bus fare from Cairo and back costs an additional $60. American citizens can purchase an Egyptian visa when they arrive in Egypt for $15. Those who come to play in the show in Cairo are responsible for their own accomodation, but we can help arrange hotel reservations.

Portland Middle Eastern Arts Update Posting Guidelines

In order to best serve everyone, and get this extensive list out on a
regular basis, please note the following guidelines:
• The Update comes out the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Make sure your submissions are in by the preceding Monday.
• Must be a Middle Eastern Arts event such as performances, exhibitions, classes or workshops.
• Please send your text in a plain and easy to read format without CAPS or colors!!!
• If sending multiple listings, please put complete info(contact, etc.) with each listing.
• Do not send info in attachments or pictures.
• No advertising of products such as cd’s, dvd’s, clothing, instruments, etc. (exceptions made for cd release parties!)
• These are the posting sections: Upcoming Events, Weekly / Monthly Events, Ongoing Classes, Out of Town Oregon and Out of Town Washington(beyond the Portland/Vancouver vicinity), Tours / Camps / Festivals, and Mailing Lists.
• We reserve the right to edit if the conditions above are not met.
