The first session of the MOA School of Turkish Music will be offered in Portland. June 11-15, 2010
The first session of the MOA School of Turkish Music will be offered in Portland, June 11-15, 2010. (MOA, the Mevlevi Order of America.) Timucin Cevikoglu, master Turkish musician, will offer instruction in Voice, Ney, Percussion, and an Ensemble class, which will include Makam (Melodic Theory) and Usul (Rhythmic Theory). We’ll start five days of instruction in close-in SE
Portland on Friday, June 11, running about 11am-6pm. Additionally, there will be a concert by Timucin and U.S. musicians on Saturday night the 12th, and a closing gathering for music, food, and community on Tuesday night June 15.
Costs: Tuition for the full course: $200
Individual Classes (60-90 minutes): $30 each
Five days of a single Class (such as Voice, Ney or Ensemble): $100

New Belly Dance Classes: “Rhythms of the Dance”
With this series students will refine their understanding of Middle Eastern rhythms in order to build a stronger connection to the music. We will explore movements, accents, and combinations that translate these rhythms through the body so that we can “become the music” in our dance.

March 3, 10, 17: “Soulful Semai”
Learn to dance to semai thaqil, the beautiful 10-count rhythm commonly found in classical Arab-Andalusian music. Please bring your veils.

April: “The Magic of Masmoudi”
A cornerstone of Arabic music, this exciting 8-count rhythm packs a punch in drum solos and in modern and classical compositions.

May: “Zils & Rhythms”
Learn to be a musician with your finger cymbals. We will work with common rhythms, such as, maqsoum, beledi, masmoudi, and saidi, focusing on pattern drills with basic movement combinations.

Beginner – Mon. 5:30-7:00 at the Woman’s Club, 1002 Washington St SE. This class is limited to 15 students. $75 for 9 weeks. You may join the current session thru May 2

Belly Robics – Drills, individual attention, steps/step combos, no choreography. Class focus is on technique & precision – must have taken a beginner dance class. Wed evenings at Mas Uda Studio – $50 for 8-10 week session. Great workout/good review for intermediate students. Limited to 10 students. Drop in rate = $10 per hour.

Private lessons – available by arrangement with Kashani. Make your own class – get 3-4 students together and a time that works for Kashani and let’s talk!!
